Our Story

Our roots are deep. Our heritage started back in 1947 when Tree roots imagePresident Harry Truman gave the first presidential address telecasted from the White House, Howard Hughes performed the maiden flight of the largest fixed-wing aircraft ever built, and Bernard (“Bernie”) Robinson, former Assistant District Director for the IRS, hung out his shingle by renting a one room office in the Jefferson Standard Life building in downtown Greensboro.

Bernie was diligent in his intent to deliver unparalleled client service. He built a legacy by bringing others into the firm who shared that same passion for making clients expect to receive the unexpected by delivering exceptional value.  With the addition of Joe Robinson, Bernie’s brother, in 1949 and Joe Kent the following year a partnership was born.  Bernie, Joe R. and Joe K. practiced and prospered together for nearly 40 years.  The firm developed a reputation for excellence in the services performed and advice given.  The bond between the firm and its clients was unique and could be described as more of a collaboration of efforts than just providing accounting and tax services.  The firm moved from its downtown location to Muirs Chapel Road in December 1986.  Joe R. retired in 1988 and Joe K. in 1989.  Although Bernie Robinson retired in 1989, he remained with the firm as a consultant and advisor until he passed away in 1994.  The original founding partners transitioned the firm to a successor group consisting of Freddy Robinson (Bernie’s son), Patricia Price and Dan Hayes. These partners and the partners that have since joined the group, currently fifteen partners in total, have adopted the same values of quality and service as the original partners in addition to a commitment to firm growth in order to attract a higher quality professional staff.

Businesses and individuals have experienced many seasons over the past 70 years.  Through prosperous and challenging economic times, Bernard Robinson & Company’s focus has been consistent with Bernie’s initial vision.  We are honored to still service the descendants of our first three clients since 1947. With our client service driven focus, we have never strived to be the largest public accounting firm, simply the best at exceeding client expectations.

Steeped within our culture is a sincere desire to keep clients abreast of relevant information, provide creative options based on deep technical knowledge and advise clients on which course of action would be most advantageous to their particular set of circumstances.  This passion for our work is part of the fiber of our culture.

We feel our approach and culture are truly unique, providing a strong foundation for an enduring values-based organization. According to Family Firm Institute, only 13% of closely held businesses make it to the 3rd generation. Bernard Robinson & Company has not only survived into the third generation, we are thriving. Over the past ten years, the firm has experienced steady growth, averaging double digits, organically simply by word-of-mouth.  Bernard Robinson & Company was named one of the Best Accounting Firms to Work For by Accounting Today magazine in 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017 and was recognized for its growth by being awarded one of the 50 fastest growing companies in the Triad in 2009 and 2010.

It has been an extraordinary 70 years and we’re only getting started.  We invite you to be a part of the next 70, beginning by honoring us with the opportunity to hear your story.
